Refined Streetwear Takes Paris: Vetements SS 2019 Collection

Demna Gvasalia’s French design collective Vetements debuted its Spring 2019 menswear collection during Paris couture week yesterday. The collection, inspired by Gvasalia’s childhood experience of civil war in his native Georgia, featured sartorial representations of Gvasalia’s emotions and struggles as a child during his tumultuous time in the 1990’s.

“I dedicated this collection to Georgia, the Georgia where my brother Guram and I grew up together in the ‘90s, and the war that happened where we lived,” he told Vogue. “I tried to face this angst and fear and pain in this show.”

The 77-look collection, despite its personal inception, stayed true to Vetements’ cool kid, streetwear aesthetic that captivated the fashion industry in 2016. If anything, the collection is just a bit more refined with tailored jackets, mosaic-printed ponchos, and classic silhouettes of the ‘80s and ‘90s.
