New Orbitz Gay Site Features LGBTQIA Hotels With A Higher Standard: Or Does It? Have you seen the new relaunch of the gay website by Orbitz called Orbitz.com/Pride? Well here is what they claim “Among what’s new to Orbitz.com/Pride are hotels that meet a higher inclusivity standard. Hotels must meet criteria – such as staff training on sexual orientations and gender identities or inclusion of LGBTQ-friendly activities and recommendations to guests – to be listed on the site. Orbitz is planning further enhancements and additions to the microsite later this year and into 2021. Even further troubling on the website is this statement “Book LGBTQIA welcoming hotels that have signed our pledge of inclusivity.”

Here are some of our local LGBTQIA welcoming resorts that you certainly expect to be there. Blue Chairs, Almar Resort, Casa Cupula, and Hotel Mercurio. These hotels have supported the LGBT traveler and hosted parties for many years. Most of the gay properties inside the gayborhood are smaller (less than 50 rooms) with the exception of Almar Resort.

However, here are some resort hotels that you do not expect to be there, much less call these “hotels LGBTQIA welcoming hotels that have signed a pledge of inclusivity.” Playa Los Arcos, The Sheraton, and Hotel Eloisa.

The original Orbitz LGBTQ microsite, GayOrbitz.com, was launched in 2002 and was one of many firsts for the Orbitz brand in support of the LGBTQIA community. Since then, Orbitz created the first mainstream TV ad featuring gay couples, was the first travel brand to hire a drag spokesperson, Miss Richfield 1981, and last year the travel site celebrated the 50th anniversary of Pride with its list of trending destinations and celebrations. However, maybe not all of the hotels in the current list for Puerto Vallarta do not meet the gay welcoming criteria. What do you think? Have you had any personal experience with these places? Should we ask to see the pledge in writing?
