Puerto Vallarta recognizes 2019 International Day Against Homophobia

The 2019 International Day against Homophobia is one to remember for Puerto Vallarta. Gay Mexico city Puerto Vallarta recognizes 2019 International Day Against Homophobia where the municipal presidency is dressed in rainbows ?? to commemorate the “International Day Against Homophobia”. Puerto Vallarta mayor Arturo Dávalos, ACT LGBT and other city officials held an awards ceremony May 17, 2019 at the presidencia where awards were presented to Ed Thomas and Paco Aronja of SETAC, William Hevener, and Paul Christ. Each person was recognized by the city for their contributions to the LGBT community in Puerto Vallarta. William Hevener formerly of ACT LGBT was instrumental in the starting and success of the first and many successful Puerto Vallarta gay pride events. 

This great news comes on the same day that Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) announced actions against homophobia, discrimination and hate crimes against people in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transgender community , transvestite and intersexual (LGBTTTI) in Mexico. Alejandra Haas, president of the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (Conapred), stressed that the program that will be carried out to safeguard the rights of the people of the LGBT community will be based on the following:

  • Provide dignified and appropriate health services,
  • work on labor inclusion actions for all people to work in an inclusive and respectful education system,
  • continue with investigations on hate crimes where all state prosecutors must meet the protocol of care in cases that involve this population.

Lastly in San Luis Potosí the bill to legalize same-sex marriage was approved by Congress on May 16 2019, in a vote of 14-12, with 1 abstention. It only awaits the Governor’s signature making San Luis Potosi the next Mexican state to recognize same sex marriage. 

Internationally, Taiwan’s legislature  on May 17, 2019 passed a bill legalizing gay marriage making Taiwan the first nation in Asia to permit gays and lesbians to wed.
