Mexico climbed to the eighth place in the ranking of arrival of international tourists of the World Tourism Organization (WTO)

Mexico climbed to the eighth place in the ranking of arrival of international tourists in the 2016 ranking of the World Tourism Organization (WTO), according to the Ministry of Tourism (Secretaría de Turismo Sectur) of the Government of Mexico.

  • Mexico registered the arrival of 35 million international tourists, which allowed it to move from ninth to eighth place.
  • The World Tourism Barometer published by UNWTO indicates that the arrival of more tourists allowed Mexico to move up a position in the WTO ranking to be located above Thailand and Turkey.
  • Sectur underscores that our country also advanced two places, from 16 to 14, in the UNWTO world ranking for foreign exchange income, obtaining an amount of $ 19.6 billion in 2016.

Sectur, by Enrique de la Madrid, said that, according to figures from the World Tourism Barometer of the WTO, corresponding to June 2017, the arrival of more tourists allowed Mexico to climb a position in the ranking of that subject, to be located above Thailand and Turkey.

The Barometer points out that Mexico also advanced in the UNWTO ranking for foreign currency income from international tourism, obtaining an amount of 19.6 billion dollars, to be ranked 14th worldwide.

The World Tourism Organization pointed out that the countries that received the most tourists in 2016 were: France, with 86.2 million tourists; United States (with final figure to be determined 77.5 million); Spain, 75.6 million; China, 59.3 million, Italy, with 52.5 million; United Kingdom, 35.8; Germany, 35.6; Mexico, 35.0 million international tourists; Thailand, 32.6, and Turkey (final figure to be determined).

The Ministry of Tourism underlined that the UNWTO analysis places Mexico as the second country that received the most tourists in the Americas during 2016, only behind the United States.

Likewise, Sectur said that, if this growth trend in tourism in our country continues, at the end of the administration of the President of the Republic, Enrique Peña Nieto, Mexico could climb two more positions in the world ranking.

It is worth mentioning that UNWTO experts rated tourism performance globally in the first four months of this year as the best in the last 12 years, exceeding the already positive expectations at the beginning of this year.

The World Tourism Organization points out that the May-August results of this year could be the most optimistic in a decade due to the significant growth in Europe’s figures.
