Coco’s accomplishments include films, television and cabaret, with a fair amount in between. As a live performer, she is best known for her solo shows where she was the boss of every facet with tributes to classic performers as Liza Minnelli. In her publicity, she is modestly entitled ‘The One. The Only.’

She was warmly welcomed back after three years to this slice of Paradise along the Bay. Her shows continually sell out and for good reason. Tonight’s opening night visitors were from among her legions of followers or soon to be so described. She wrote a story of her life emphasizing the current affairs but incorporating memories from her early childhood like wearing women’s shoes in front of a mirror. Her life and for that matter, she states, the state of the world currently is in the midst of tension. Her purpose at times successfully is to cope with and tame this tension. “Circles of love.”
Coco sang a delightful “I Don’t Want Nobody Else” and then called out ‘I want you, Puerto Vallarta. Nobody else.’ Her crowd screamed in delight, agreeing with her assessment but also for having her back on a local stage. Her comedic schtick is a stream of life’s memories, one after another. Which ones are true? She knows how to elicit roaring laughs from the viewers.. She related how once in Spain, she saw a lizard which scurried away from her in fright. She sent out love vibes and the lizard came back to her side and danced gleefully. She took this as a lesson for all of her life: send out love and it will come back to you. She once said, ‘That was weird. And it’s going to get weirder because that’s what drag queens do. Modestly she said, ‘I am a low-end celebrity drag queen.’
At the age of 53, Coco has been in this business for 28 years and has shifted slowly but gracefully into the upper regions of the theater and has opened doors for hundreds of young people searching to be themselves without ridicule. She is an icon and wears her tiara well. Coco recognized herself as a trailblazer since she paved the way for people of every demeanor to ‘find their voice’. She tried to lessen the tension of “The Fear”: ‘I don’t know what is real anymore.’ Her body revealed the strain but she worked hard on taming it.

Coco reminisced about being a boy/girl and tense since she/she was unable to figure out who she was. She did know that she wanted to be the leading lady of a musical and identified with Audrey in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ singing “Skid Row’, no doubt secretly in high heels when no one was around.. She related stories of meeting Liza, Shirley and Chita in person which led into “Ring Them Bells” from the televised concert film “Liza with a ‘Z'”. The audience was beseeched to sing choral portions and ring any key chains. Next, she touched on “Lost Boys” with “The Killing Moon”: ‘Give yourself to him.’ Coco discussed life’s tensions which may be experienced since ‘We push ourselves because it gives us life.’ She transformed into Roxie, the star of Chicago and delivered “Nowadays”: ‘Isn’t it great. Isn’t it grand.’ Coco must be in the center spotlight, on stage and in life. She is indeed grand and endearing.

Coco Peru ended the evening with two superb songs which she presented terrifically. “Maybe This Time” and “What I Did For Love”. This celebrity lady knows how to assemble an entertaining show, with both serious thoughtfulness and laughter. She forces everyone to think and consider their actions toward others. Treat all people as you would wish to be treated.

Coco Peru AKA Clinton Leupp has been active in the LGBT community for over 25 years and has devoted much work with AIDS-related charities. She has “Given a lot to the community.”
