Puerto Vallarta forms Council to protect Centro. A new Citizen Council for the Historic Center of Puerto Vallarta has officially been formed on July 10, 2025, launching a community-driven initiative to protect, restore, and elevate centro historico, the heart of the city. Puerto Vallarta, long cherished as Mexico’s top LGBTQ+ beach destination, is now taking bold new steps to preserve one of its most beloved treasures—the Historic Center.

Why This Matters for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Puerto Vallarta forms Council to protect Centro and offers LGBTQ+ travelers more than just great beaches and nightlife—they are the cultural soul of Puerto Vallarta. From cobblestone streets and art galleries to historic buildings and the iconic Malecón, the Historic Center in the Romantic Zone reflects the city’s unique blend of tradition, diversity, and warm hospitality. This new initiative ensures that future generations of locals and tourists—including the LGBTQ+ community—can continue to enjoy a safe, beautiful, and welcoming downtown experience.

  • Rosa Jazmín Rosas Flores, a local educator, will serve as secretary of minutes.

  • Alejandra Cornejo, Director of Economic Promotion and Tourism, will act as secretary of the advisory committee.

This mix of leadership and grassroots voices sends a clear message: preserving Puerto Vallarta’s heritage is a shared responsibility.

What Projects Are Planned?

Mayor Munguía announced plans to rehabilitate the Malecón (boardwalk), a favorite gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. This project aims to restore its charm while enhancing walkability, safety, and accessibility—an essential upgrade for the city’s many Pride and cultural events.

Additional restoration efforts include:

  • Mismaloya Pier: A key access point to jungle and beach adventures south of town.

  • Highway Interchange Improvements: Better road access means smoother trips from the airport and surrounding areas.

These improvements are being supported in part by the Government of Jalisco and Secretary of Tourism Michelle Fridman, reflecting a strong public-private partnership model.

Why It’s Great News for LGBTQ+ Visitors

Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as the “San Francisco of Mexico” isn’t just about parties—it’s about enhancing culture. Restoring the historic center ensures that queer travelers can continue to enjoy:

  • Safe, walkable streets in the heart of the Romantic Zone

  • Vibrant street art, artisan markets, and cultural landmarks

  • A deeper connection to the authentic history of Vallarta

Whether you’re here for Vallarta Pride, fabulous restaurant events, Bear and Leather week or a romantic honeymoon, this new focus on cultural heritage will make your stay even more meaningful.
