VGCC to start ZonaSafe. In light of recent events involving Venus, winner of Canada’s Drag Race, we want to share an update with our community. We are grateful she is safe, recovering, and feeling supported by the outpouring of love and care from the Puerto Vallarta LGBTQIA2S+ community.
At the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center, we stand in unwavering support of LGBTQ+ individuals and condemn all forms of violence, discrimination, and abuse.
Following her initial post describing a distressing experience, Venus has since shared a public statement clarifying that the injuries sustained were the result of an altercation prior to any police involvement.
We are organizing the community to launch ZonaSafe, a three-point security initiative designed to provide fast, accessible aid and support to anyone facing violence, discrimination, or disorientation, whether involving the police or not.
VGCC to start ZonaSafe as representatives from the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center met with municipal police and local government officials to review the incident and to discuss strategies to strengthen community safety. We are also coordinating with nightlife venues to develop clearer communication protocols and improve the experience of LGBTQ+ residents and tourists alike.
Puerto Vallarta has long been seen as a safe and inclusive destination. However, safety is not a static title—it is a responsibility. And safety must feel real for everyone, even in moments of crisis. That’s why our team is on the ground daily, advocating, listening, and responding. VGCC to start ZonaSafe is part of this ongoing effort to hold systems accountable and offer immediate care when our community members need it most.
