Safe Zone Gives Police Badges

Safe Zone Gives Police Badges. In a powerful gesture of cooperation between law enforcement and the LGBTQ+ community, municipal police officers stationed in Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone received personalized identification badges as part of the ongoing Safe Zone Campaign, organized by the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center and MOVii (Movement for Equality in Mexico).

Safe Zone gives Police badges in a presentation ceremony that took place at the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center in honor of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, with key leaders in attendance: Pedro López, Director of the Community Center, and Víctor Espíndola, President of MOVii. Representing the local Tourist Police, Commander José Daniel Hernández, who oversees operations in the Romantic Zone, accepted the badges and expressed gratitude on behalf of the officers.

“We are distributing these personalized badges so that police officers assigned to the Romantic Zone can be clearly identified,” explained Víctor Espíndola. “This initiative responds directly to one of the LGBTQ+ community’s main concerns: knowing who is responsible for public safety and promoting accountable, community-based policing.”

Commander Hernández noted that the initiative helps humanize police interactions and strengthens trust:

“We receive this gesture with sincere appreciation and renewed commitment. It not only helps residents and visitors identify officers easily, but also builds confidence in our work.”

What Is the Safe Zone Campaign?

Officially launched on May 20, 2025, the Safe Zone Campaign aims to ensure that Puerto Vallarta—especially the Romantic Zone—remains a welcoming, secure, and respectful space for LGBTQ+ locals and tourists alike.

The campaign is structured around three core pillars:

  1. Prevention: Educating the public about what behaviors are prohibited under Municipal Regulations and offering tips to avoid misunderstandings with authorities.

  2. Eyes on the Streets: Strengthening community oversight to discourage abuse and promote respectful behavior in public spaces.

  3. Follow-Up: Providing a digital platform for reporting incidents, with the option to refer cases to relevant authorities such as the Municipal Comptroller, Internal Affairs, CEDHJ, or the State Attorney General’s Office.

The organizations launched the website www.moviimexico.org/zonasafe, where community members and tourists can file anonymous or supported incident reports. Reports may be submitted confidentially or with legal/community assistance.

Both MOVii and the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center reaffirmed their long-term commitment to building a safe, inclusive, and violence-free Puerto Vallarta, particularly in the Romantic Zone—one of Mexico’s most popular LGBTQ+ districts.
