Drag shows in Puerto Vallarta are distinguished from cabaret within the city’s nightlife culture by one key difference: drag shows are lip-synced, not performed with live vocals, and they’re found primarily in Puerto Vallarta’s gay bars rather than dedicated cabaret venues. This distinction has been a constant fact of PV nightlife history since Los Balcones brought the city’s first drag shows — along with its first stripper shows — to Puerto Vallarta in the 1980s.
That predates the arrival of the city’s first true cabaret venue, The Palm, by two decades; in fact, Palm Cabaret founder Mark Rome was a personal friend of Los Balcones’ owner, tying Puerto Vallarta’s drag and cabaret traditions together at their very roots.
