Gay Beaches & Coastal Day Trips
Banderas Bay offers two very different beach experiences: the social, walkable town beaches right in the center of the action, and the secluded, jungle-backed coves along the southern coast.
| Beach region | The scene | Getting there |
|---|---|---|
| 🏖️ Los Muertos Beach (town center) | The center of the gay beach scene, concentrated around Blue Chairs and Green Chairs (Ritmos) just south of the pier. Social, busy, great people-watching. | Walkable from anywhere in the Zona Romántica. |
| 🚤 Secluded south coast coves | Jungle-framed hideaways including Las Ánimas, the surf at Quimixto, and the car-free village of Yelapa with its waterfall hikes. | Boat-only, via water taxi from Los Muertos Pier or Boca de Tomatlán. |
Many of the most beautiful beaches south of town aren’t reachable by road. Here’s how the local water taxis, or pangas, work:
- 📍 Where to board: The easiest departure point is the Los Muertos Pier in the Romantic Zone. You can also take a 30-minute bus or taxi south to Boca de Tomatlán, which has more frequent departures and a shorter ride.
- ⏰ Schedules: Boats from Los Muertos Pier to Yelapa typically leave at staggered times, with popular morning departures around 11:00am and 11:45am. Always confirm the last return boat with your captain — most return between 3:30pm and 5:00pm.
- 💵 Cost: Tickets are sold at the booths at the foot of Los Muertos Pier. Round-trip to Yelapa runs about $550–$600 MXN (roughly $30–$32 USD). Private charters are also available at the piers.
- 🎒 What to bring: Wear shoes you can slip off — some landings require stepping into ankle-deep water. Bring cash, since card readers are rare on the southern beaches.
Puerto Vallarta Things to Do & Excursions
Beyond the beach clubs and nightlife, Puerto Vallarta is a playground for outdoor adventure and culture — the Sierra Madre mountains drop straight into the Pacific, setting up everything from zip-lining to catamaran sailing. Back in town, a gallery scene and live theater fill out the daytime.

|---|---|---|
