Puerto Vallarta Listed A Top LGBTQ+ Travel Destination By Airbnb Survey

During the 40th Annual Global Convention of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) hosted in San Juan, Puerto Rico October 4-7, 2023 , Airbnb presented the results of a survey by the IGLTA Foundation that identify new travel trends among the LGBTQ+ community1 including accommodation preferences and inclusive destinations.

Here are some of the key results found in the survey

After Europe, Latin America is the second favorite destination the LGBTQ+ community is most excited to travel to.

The top countries to visit and stated were the most inclusive for the LGBTQ+ community were Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Colombia and Brazil.

The top cities respondents list they want to visit is Rio de Janeiro in Brasil, Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City in Mexico, San Juan in Puerto Rico, and Bogotá and Medellin in Colombia.

More than 60% of respondents are planning to travel more than twice during 2024.

What factors determine where the LGBTQ+ community will travel to

    • 35% said they choose where they can feel accepted as members of the LGBTQ+ community
    • 30% say it is based on affordability
    • 30% base it on safety and security

Nearly 80% of the LGBTQ+ travelers said they have stayed in an Airbnb listing in the last year.
Why did they choose Airbnb?

  • 40% to be able to stay outside a tourist area and have a local experience
  • 40% for the different amenities they provide
  • 20% to have more privacy and feel more welcome.
