Puerto Vallarta creates sexual diversity department. The Puerto Vallarta City Council approved a reform to the Municipal Government Regulations on December 18, 2024. Article 230 in municipal regulations establishes the creation of the Sexual Diversity Department in the Quality of Life and Social Development Directorate.
This new agency aims to promote and protect the human rights of LGBTIQ+ people and communities and guaranteeing principles of equality, dignity, inclusion and non-discrimination.
Puerto Vallarta creates sexual diversity department represents a historic step towards the institutionalization of attention to sexual and gender diversity in the city government of Puerto Vallarta. Vallarta Diversity Network and the Movement for Equality in Mexico, MOVii have been engaged in a long process of political advocacy to produce this result. This initiative was previously signed by all the candidates for the municipal presidency in a public commitment made on May 17, 2024.
Puerto Vallarta creates Sexual Diversity Department with these various powers:
– Design programs to prevent and eliminate discrimination against people of sexual diversity.
– Coordinate strategies for social inclusion and visibility of relevant causes.
– Promote a culture of respect for human rights through training public servants.
– Establish inter-institutional links with civil and academic organizations for the implementation of affirmative measures.
Councilman Luis Escoto, the first openly gay councilman, Councilwoman Melissa Madero, and president of the Substantive Equality and Diversity Commission, Chuyita López were among the strong supportors of this initiative to build a more inclusive Puerto Vallarta. They also recognize the need to coordinate efforts with other municipal and state agencies to ensure the effectiveness of the department.
