Puerto Vallarta’s cabaret and theatre scene is part of the city’s thriving gay nightlife, but it’s a genuinely distinct art form from the drag shows found nightly in Puerto Vallarta’s gay bars. We define cabaret as live-vocal performance — the artist singing in real time, often backed by a live band or pianist — as opposed to a bar-style drag show, which is typically lip-synced to a soundtrack.

Puerto Vallarta’s cabaret scene traces back to The Palm Cabaret, founded by Mark Rome in 2000. Act2PV followed around 2012, opened by Danny Mininni and still running today. The scene briefly expanded further with Incanto, a quasi-cabaret space on the second floor of Nacho Daddy’s that operated from 2016 to 2023, and most recently with the 2025 opening of Coco Cabaret, The Palm’s sister venue.

The cabaret season typically runs from Halloween and Day of the Dead through the end of Vallarta Pride in late May. During peak season, every venue offers at least two, often three shows a day, seven days a week — meaning a visitor can genuinely build an entire evening, or an entire week, around cabaret alone. It’s also become something of a local tradition for repeat visitors: many guests return to Puerto Vallarta year after year and make a point of catching several different shows across a single vacation, sometimes four, five, or even six shows in a two-week stay.

Over more than two decades, Puerto Vallarta has hosted an impressive roster of international performers, including Lady Bunny, Jackie Beat, Coco Peru, Miss Richfield 1981, Hedda Lettuce, Mama Tits, Sutton Lee Seymour, and Miss Conception, alongside current headliners like Tynomi Banks of Canada’s Drag Race — one of only two drag performers ever featured in a Super Bowl commercial. Performers consistently point to a few reasons they keep coming back: enthusiastic, receptive audiences, and professional-grade sound and lighting systems that let a live-vocal performance really shine.

Part of what makes this scene so unusually strong may come down to Puerto Vallarta’s audience itself. The city’s straight community is notably open-minded and makes up a significant share of cabaret ticket buyers — by some estimates, close to half — which dramatically expands the potential audience beyond a purely LGBTQ+ base and makes these venues far more commercially viable than similar cabaret rooms elsewhere.
