Alejo Ospina has released his new project, ¿Aprietas?, which turns the internet’s favorite joke about him into a brand of products and accessories, plus a song. The Colombian content creator released the song aprietas? with 2AT and opened an online store, also called ¿Aprietas?, that he describes as a pleasure wellness brand and that ships to many countries, including Mexico.

When GAYPV interviewed Alejo in January, he said he was working on a project for his Latin American followers and that the story behind its name would surprise them. This is that project.

For readers new to him, Alejo Ospina is a Colombian content creator based in Medellín.

Where the name comes from

“Alejo Ospina ya no aprieta” was not a name he chose. It was a label put on him by others in 2024. According to Homosensual, it spread as a meme in June, two months after an April 2024 post in which Alejo compared Colombian and Mexican men, which drew a hostile reaction in Mexico. It kept circulating for years. The brand’s name answers it directly. The Instagram account bio puts it this way: de una funa nace una marca, or from a public callout, a brand is born. Its tagline is “turn tragic into magic.”

Editor’s note: the size comparisons described by Homosensual refer to genital size, not height. In a June 15, 2024 statement, Alejo said Brazilians outsize all Latinos.

The joke plays on the Spanish verb apretar, which means to squeeze or to be tight, and it is a crude, sexual jab at him. The meme claimed something about him had changed, with the words “ya no,” or “no longer.” The brand’s name replies with a question instead of a denial: “¿Aprietas?” which roughly means “do you?” That is our reading of the name, not a statement from Alejo, but the tagline “turn tragic into magic” points the same way. It is also why taking the phrase as a brand name is such a bold move.

The brand’s own About page tells the same story. It describes ¿Aprietas? as a viral controversy from 2024 about Alejo and his content, and as a wave of online hate spread through repetitive comments and memes full of prejudice and insecurity. It shows the phrase “Dios aprieta, pero Alejo Ospina no” as a piece of digital art credited to an unknown author. The line appears to play on the Spanish saying that God squeezes but does not strangle.

Why it matters

Turning an embarrassing moment into a business is a familiar move for creators, but few do it with a song, a name taken straight from the joke and a full product line at once. Instagram posts about the launch say Alejo spent more than two years on the idea. We have not independently confirmed that.

We will watch how the brand develops. In the meantime, you can listen to the track on Beatport or Apple Music and browse the store at aprietas.com.

Lee nuestra entrevista completa, en inglés: The Alejo Ospina Story.
