Puerto Vallarta Airport Expansion 2025. Grupo Aeropuerto del Pacifico which operates the Gustavo Díaz Ordaz airport has announced a major Puerto Vallarta Airport Expansion 2025 project. The project has been underway since late 2022 and expected to be completed in 2025.

Build a new state of the art terminal (Terminal #2) Gradually opening in 2025 and fully operational in 2026. The new terminal will add 68,000 m2 about 150 % increase in airport space. The terminal is designed to be the first Zero Energy airport in Latin America conserving energy and water usage. Also major upgraded infrastructure to improve international arrivals (customs and immigration) is expected.

Puerto Vallarta Airport Expansion 2025 Why is it important

With the capacity to receive more passengers annually, the airport is projected to increase the region’s tourism arrivals by 10-15% within the first year of operation. It will also make Puerto Vallarta more accessible to international visitors, particularly from Europe and Asia, helping to diversify the tourism base and sustain growth beyond traditional North American travelers.

Mexican Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez Zamora said in first two months of 2025, 3.89 million foreign tourists arrived to Mexico by air, a 2.7% increase over 2024 and 17.9 percent more than 2019 with 3,299,000 international arrivals, A majority of those arrivals are from the US, Canada and Argentina.  In 1st part of 2025, 814,352 Canadian tourists arrived 11.8% more in 2024 and 15.6% more than 2019.

Alaska Airlines adding new routes to Puerto Vallarta starting January 2025.

Alaska Airlines currently provides direct flights to Puerto Vallarta from St. Louis, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Medford, Portland, Seattle, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego and Los Angeles. This is 8% of total passenger arrivals to PVR second only to American Airlines providing 8.1% of arrivals.

Of the 2 large airports operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), Only 2 showed an increase in passenger traffic for 2024.
Puerto Vallarta increasing .2% registered 6,803,500 passengers up from 6,715,500 in 2023.
