Understanding PrEP, PEP & DoxyPEP
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)
PrEP is a highly effective HIV prevention medication taken before potential exposure to HIV. When taken as prescribed, it dramatically reduces the risk of HIV infection and has become one of the most important advances in HIV prevention.
PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)
PEP is emergency HIV medication that must be started within 72 hours after a possible HIV exposure. Completing the prescribed treatment greatly reduces the likelihood of HIV infection following an unexpected exposure.
DoxyPEP
DoxyPEP involves taking doxycycline shortly after sexual activity to help reduce the risk of certain bacterial sexually transmitted infections, including syphilis and chlamydia. It is an emerging prevention strategy recommended for some individuals after consultation with a healthcare professional.
Community Programs & Support
Beyond healthcare, the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center offers programs that strengthen community connections and improve overall wellness.
Programs regularly include:
- Mental health counseling
- Psychotherapy
- English language classes
- HIV support groups
- Substance use recovery support
- Yoga and wellness classes
- Dance and cultural activities
- Educational seminars
- Volunteer opportunities
- Community outreach events
These programs help create a welcoming environment where LGBTQ+ individuals can build friendships, access support, and become active members of Puerto Vallarta’s diverse community.
A Growing Community Resource
The Vallarta Gay+ Community Center continues to expand its programs and services to meet the growing needs of Puerto Vallarta’s LGBTQ+ population. In 2026, the organization announced plans to nearly double its facility by expanding into the neighboring building, allowing additional space for counseling, support groups, educational programming, HIV prevention services, and community events.
Today, VGCC serves thousands of people each year and has become one of Mexico’s most respected LGBTQ+ nonprofit organizations, recognized for its innovative HIV prevention initiatives, public health partnerships, and commitment to creating a healthier and more inclusive Puerto Vallarta.
