Gay Dating Apps deleting ethnicity filters. Grindr joins Scruff in removing the ethnicity filter on their gay social dating app. In a statement on June 1, 2020 on its twitter page Grindr says “We have decided to remove ethnicity filter from their next update release.” This is part of their committment to fight sexual racism and based on customer feedback. Gay dating apps have created a new form of racism, sexual racism, hence a person’s preference or intolerance for potential sex based on the other’s sexual ethnicity.

In 2018, Scruff removed ethnicity as a default display option on their profiles. The state now they will be making further changes to ensure the ethnicity is not searchable on their platform.

Also in Sept 2018, Grindr launched a kinder Grindr, known as “Kindr” to fight racism, femmephobia, transphobia, sizeism, status-shaming, and other discriminatory behaviors commonly seen on the app. The Kindr/Grindr app community guidelines state “We have a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination, harassment, and abusive behavior. We want you to be yourself, but not at the expense of someone else. Anyone found bullying, threatening, or defaming another user will be banned. We will also remove any discriminatory statements displayed on profiles. You’re free to express your preferences, but we’d rather hear about what you’re into, not what you aren’t. Profile language that is used to openly discriminate against other users’ traits and characteristics will not be tolerated and will be subject to review by our moderation team.”

Especially among gay men, sexual racism is a very controversial subject. Although some characterize sexual discrimination by not choosing partners on the basis of ethnicity/race as a form of racism, others present it only a matter of sexual preference. Does sexual preference in bed equate to deeper biases of civil rights? The other end of the sexual discrimination spectrum is fetishisation, or sexual interest in someone exclusively because of their skin color. That would be like choosing a black guy because he is “hung and dominant”. This is a controversy that will no doubt cause endless debates. Tell us your thoughts.
