COVID-19 Update From Puerto Vallarta Gay Hotel Casa Cupula April 28 2020. We hope this message finds you safe and sound in these difficult times.  Like many of you, we have been staying en casa and dreaming of brighter days, with the best moments being the well wishes we receive from our friends around the world. All of whom have said more or less the same thing: that they can’t wait to get out of the house and come back to Puerto Vallarta. So we’re writing with an update on what’s happening here at Casa Cupula, to make that possible.

No doubt many of you are aware how devastating the pandemic has been for hotels, restaurants, venues and the entire hospitality sector. The government here has closed most public establishments, including bars, clubs, shops, the beaches and even the Malecon through the end of May. On a positive note, the sky is bluer, the ocean clearer, and the birds chirpier as mother nature gets a long overdue break.

But tourism is the lifeblood of the local economy, and you are sorely missed. As with so many places right now, Vallarta is a surreal place to be – the sight of an empty Olas Altas or the eerie quiet of Saturday nights underscore the stark transformation this pandemic has wrought on our normally vibrant and lively town.

But we’re also writing to say: We’re going to be okay. Casa Cupula opened its doors in 2002. We have survived the Great Recession, the Swine Flu scare, and a handful of hurricanes, among other crisis. In this case, we’re fortunate that the state government acted quickly and forcefully to minimize the impact of Covid-19 here.

While this may yet be our greatest challenge, we have no doubt that we will be here to continue our mission of welcoming each guest as a friend, no matter who you are or where you come from.

In the short term, we have made some necessary service changes to ensure the health and safety of our guests and employees, which is our top priority:

  • In light of local restrictions, we are not accepting new guests until June 1, though our team is working from home and ready to assist you with reservations from that date forward.
  • In June, the hotel will reopen with limited operations and new protocols to ensure the highest standards of safety and cleanliness for our staff and guests.
  • Bistro Casa Cupula will be open only for guests, providing breakfast on our open-air dining terrace, then room service daily until 4PM.
  • Pump Gym will be open only for guests with a prior appointment, to ensure social distancing and cleaning between use.
  • The Pool Club is open only for guests, with social distancing rules in place, but publicly closed until further notice, with all events suspended. Food and drinks may be ordered from the Bistro.
  • Spa facilities and treatments are also suspended until further notice.

Conditions permitting, we hope to resume regular service, with limited rooms, in mid-October. And we expect to fully return to normal operations by Thanksgiving, including the reopening of the Pool Club, Pump Gym and Spa, and the welcoming back of our full team. In the meantime, Casa Cupula remains a lovely place to be – with high-speed Wi-Fi and print/scan/fax for anyone hoping to WFHotel, and of course the warm air and beautiful Pacific sunsets that have made Vallarta a beloved destination for decades.

Our Team

Right now our focus is on the well-being of our employees and their families. Many are single wage earners or have spouses who have lost their job. All of them are in need. To the extent that it is financially possible, we are trying to maintain everyone on payroll with healthcare, albeit with limited hours and staggered weeks off. But without the usual stream of your generous tips or commissions on sales, it is still hard to for families to make ends meet. We know we have to do more.

After many longtime guests asked how they could pitch in to support the Casa Cupula family they’ve come to know, we set up a tax-deductible fund with the local Casa Jojo Foundation to provide each employee with weekly “dispensas” of food and personal supplies, so that no one who works here will risk going hungry. We have been moved to tears at the outpouring of support we received, and have already funded more than half of what we need to keep this running through low season.

We’re doubling down on this mission, and committing a portion of all new reservations and gift certificate purchases to directly support this fund. If you can plan your upcoming travel now, not only will you help support our team and their families as we weather the worst of this, we’re offering significant savings and booking flexibility to accommodate date changes.

From the entire Casa Cupula Family, we can’t wait to welcome you back with a smile and a pitcher of margaritas as soon as possible.

Until then,
Don Pickens & Team
